"A masterful album crammed with timeless tales and crackling fireside wisdom...fierce storyteller and skillful painter of sound...album is a vivid world filled with poignant accounts like "Louisiana Man" and "Chicken Bones Jones."         SONGWRITERS MONTHLY

"BROKEN CHORD does not hit your ears as much as it slinks, shutters, shakes and shimmies across the surface of your mind."

                                                                                                                                                  THE ALTERNATE ROOT

Halford - who produced the just-released album MUDSHACK  by San Francisco Americana-Folk guitarist, Peter Rudy -  was recently proclaimed one of the "Ten Most Influential Artists of the Decade" by popular music, film and culture publication, PASTE MAGAZINE.

Halford has been called "An Americana heavyweight" (MERCURY NEWS) for his heartfelt songs about the conditions of the everyday man and woman in America. Among his most memorable: "Cry of Hope," about Americans' need to keep faith in America; and "Louisiana Man," about the 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster and our government's slow response to it. As validation of Halford's writing prowess, he won "2009 Songwriter of the Year" at the recent 5th Annual South Bay (Los Angeles) Music Awards. BROKEN CHORD went to #8 on the Americana radio charts.

In high school, Halford ditched classes and came only to take the tests. According to school records, he had the worst attendance of any graduating student. He decided to add trouble w/the law to his resume. Then came a guitar from his dad, and things started to turn. After high school, Halford enrolled in architecture school in San Francisco. While walking along Market Street, he watched a legendary street band-Jimmy Ventilator and Harry Spider-playing Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson, and the Ventures. Halford convinced them that he should join the band.

For more than a year, he cut his guitar chops on the street, playing to crowds in Chinatown and Union Square until the police closed them down. His street gig led him to play with Oakland blues greats Sonny Lane, Mississippi Johnny Waters, and JJ Malone in clubs throughout that city. He also formed his own roots rockabilly band, "The Snappers," playing for students at U.C. Berkeley, serving as the house band at Ruthie's Inn in Berkeley, and performing with the Blasters, Chris Isaak, and the Beat Farmers. Music was Halford's salvation.

  • The Grumpy, Slight Of Hand In Concert - This Friday, July 9, The Alibi in Cameron Park (Sacramento Area)
Great musicianship.Guitar solos carry the album through without overpowering Cameron’s vocals - a pleasing marriage of Alice in Chains’ Layne Stanley and Tool’s Maynard James Keenan'¦ the songs here should please mainstream hard rockers… The Grumpy’s balanced blend of southern rock and metal rock could see the band opening for Nickelback or Ozzfest in 2010.” SACRAMENTO ROCK MUSIC EXAMINER (CAMERON PARK) - Cameron Carbrey, guitarist/front person of Sacramento area-based hard rock trio The Grumpy, has just finished scoring soon-to-be-released film, MY LIFE IN TRIPLICATE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZbOkMbUQ4k). The Grumpy’s new video “Lie Da Die,” described by Carbrey as a “metaphorical autobiography,” was recently recorded at The Alibi in Cameron Park (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmwwTOn1YHI). “Lie Da Die” will be included on the follow-up to THROES OF CONTEMPLATION and is set for a Spring 2011 release. The band received two nominations - “Rock Album Of The Year” and “Rock Single Of The Year” (for ‘Change’) '“ at the 19th Annual Los Angeles Music Awards last November. They also won “Best Independent CD” at the 2009 Annual South Bay (Los Angeles.) Music Awards last April and were a “Hot 100 Band For 2009” selection by MUSIC CONNECTION magazine, the second year in a row they were so honored. Fans of The Grumpy can now watch a recent two-part interview with the band conducted by YOUR MUSIC MAGAZINE by logging onto www.yourmagazine.com. Grumpy music can now also be purchased via downloads on the popular sites ITunes, Rhapsody, and Napster by logging onto www.thegrumpy.com and clicking on the “Store” page. The Grumpy’s new jewelry, including earrings and necklaces line were featured in the May 2010 issue of national publication, MUSIC CONNECTION. Reviews for THROES OF CONTEMPLATION have been positive since its release. The SACRAMENTO NEWS AND REVIEW wrote, “I’ve just tasted American Rock, and The Grumpy has a good recipe: Take rock instruments, put them into real musicians’ hands, add soothing male vocals and shake the whole thing up with some beats…Caution: This will contaminate even the most skeptic rockers.” L.A.’s ALL ACCESS MAGAZINE raves, “Great lyrics and musicianship..loved the guitar riffs in the last song titled “Misunderstood” '“ my fav. Just as I thought it was over, turns out they saved the best for last. Yes indeed, this Sacramento-based band did pleasantly knock my socks off. If this is a taste of what’s more to come, then bring it on….I was completely blown away by The Grumpy!” THROES OF CONTEMPLATION was recently added to the play list at KSSU-FM (Sacramento State University). Formed in 2000, The Grumpy are fronted by multi-instrumentalist/composer Cameron Carbrey (guitars/vocals), with the rhythm section filled out by J. W. Brooks on percussion and Justin on bass. The Grumpy’s sound has been compared to such acts as Rush, Nickelback, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, and Pink Floyd, along with a host of others, while still maintaining a sound all their own. In 2006 The Grumpy began playing some of L.A.’s most notable clubs '“ among them, the world famous Whisky A Go-Go, The Roxy, and The Viper Room, all located on the celebrated Sunset Strip. These are the same stages where bands such as The Doors, Ozzy Osbourne and Van Halen have performed, along with countless other legends. As a result of these performances, The Grumpy received a “Rock Band of the Year” nomination for the South Bay Music Awards that year. Immediately following their return to Sacramento, The Grumpy was selected as KRXQ 98 Rock’s “February Artist of the Month “ for both their fresh sound and work with the UC Davis Children’s Hospital fundraiser.
